4.- Date of establishment and leaders.

• Founded in April 1990 and headquartered in Buenos Aires, FUCEMA is led by a President and a 6-member Administrative Council. FUCEMA is registered at the General Justice Inspection (IGJ Nº 867/90) and at the Federal Administration of Public Incomes (CUIT Nº 30-64131861-9).

• The President, Rodolfo Tecchi, is a biologist (University of Buenos Aires) and is working since 1990 as a researcher at the National University of Jujuy. He was also a member of the Advisory Committee for Biosphere Reserves of UNESCO (1996-98).

 5.- Mandate.

FUCEMA is a non-profit non-governmental organization whose objective is to promote the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity at species, genes and ecosystems level, based on solid scientific and technical knowledge. It identifies, designs, promotes and/or executes programmes and projects in different ecosystems, by itself or in association with other NGOs, academic and research institutions, government agencies, private sector enterpises and local communities.

To further its institutional mission, FUCEMA participates actively in numerous international and national nature conservation networks, such as The Man and Biosphere Program (MAB) of UNESCO, the World Conservation Union (IUCN), the N ational Network on Protected Areas of Argentina, and the Latin American Network for Sustainability, among others.

 

6.- Sources of funding.

The sources of financial contributions to FUCEMA are mainly international, including the World Conservation Union (IUCN), UNESCO, the European Union DG XI, the Global Environmental Facility (GEF), and the Fund for the Americas.

National sources of financial contributions include official organizations such as the Argentinean Institute of Plant Sanitation and Quality (Instituto Argentino de Sanidad y Calidad Vegetal), the National Parks Administration, Corporation for the Development of the Delta, as well as private entities such as DuPont S.A. In addition, FUCEMA has acted as a consultant in conservation and sustainable use topics for World Bank based projects in Argentina.

 

7.- Recent activities/programs, in particular those relevant to GEF.

Recent Activities
• Conformation of national biodiversity groups for the implementation of National Biodiversity Strategies: Responsible for the Argentinean chapter of the project that was financed by IUCN’s Regional Office for South America with a grant from German cooperation.
• Policy dialogues on fisheries, “Toward sustainable fishing in Argentina”: financed by IUCN’s Regional Office for South America with a grant from Danish cooperation.
• Agroforestry development based on multiple use of non-wood native forest resources in the northeast of Misiones Province: financed by the European Commission and the Fund for the Americas.
• Diffusion of the concept of Biosphere Reserves and of the Seville Strategy: fuinden by UNESCO.
• The meaning of sustainable development within an agricultural and regional context: carried out in San Francisco, Province of Córdoba, together with the Civil Association for Sustainable Development Los Algarrobos.
• Economic tools and incentives for the conservation of biodiversity in the rainforest of Misiones: financed by IUCN and the Government of Misiones.
• Categorization of mammal and bird species of Argentina according to the degree of risk: financed by DuPont SA and the Administration of National Parks (in collaboration with the Ornithological Association and the Argentine Society for the Study of Mammals).
• Identification of the main obstacles for sustainable development: financed by Lloyds Bank (in collaboration with the Civil Association for Sustainable Development Los Algarrobos).
• National Biodiversity Strategy of the Argentine Republic (PNUD/ARG/96/G31): FUCEMA was selected for the coordination of this national relevant project.
• National Biodiversity Group of IUCN National Committee. Fucema was selected to coordinate this group, and is responsible for general project selection, coordination and administration. There are at the present 12 small projects executed by ten different institutions within this initiative. Financial support comes from IUCN-SUR office.

Publications

In general, FUCEMA publishes the findings and lessons of its projects through technical bulletins and other specialized books. It has organized numerous dissemination events related to project activities and has also participated in numerous congresses, seminars, symposia and national and international events to share its experience. Most recent publications include:

• Conservation and Management of the Puna and Frontal Mountain Range of Argentina. The role of Biosphere Reserves (with UNESCO-ROSTLAC). 1998.
• Red Book of Threatened Mammals and Birds of Argentina (with SAREM-AOP & APN). 1997.
• Main obstacles for sustainable development, 1999 (with Los Algarrobos and Lloyds Bank).
